Ospreys Paradox

When I walked the shoreline in Bar Harbour in Maine, I came upon an Osprey Nest. This rough osprey nest of various debris of humanity and sticks reigns over the waterfront, with its throne tall on a rusting, decaying metal structure. The area is littered with debris from years of various marine uses. In the chaos of this place, a mother osprey raises her young. There was a juxtaposition of here, old versus new, the past and the future, and the decay of humanity and new life.

Osprey Bird

Since the dawn of time, the heavens undisturbed blues

Our wings ride the currents of Nature’s breath in endless seeking

Lurking overhead, the master of what transpires below,

Berthed my young, worshipping the glory of the heavens above

Generation after generation, inside the circle of life for all

The progress of humanity has changed all…Still, I survive

Beaches I once envisioned are now covered with towels and litter

This Raptor’s eyes stare at the endless landslide of the hourglass

Now humanity realizes all creatures have gifts to balance one’s life

Once feared and hunted, now revered as a soaring deity,

Ospreys overcome challenges as man struggles in the dust below

Structures now become a haven for refuge in dangerous times

What man discards becomes our blocks to shelter our young

A nest of young feathers eager to give flight to paradises call

Surrounded by man’s destruction of the Earth…We soldier on,

Was once thought useless, but now inspires humanity’s thoughts

We soar overhead of man’s vessels that take from the sea too much

Witness to humanity’s insatiable thirst to deplete all before him

A creature of the sky asks for some space to live out its dreams

We, the Osprey, seek not to be another in history’s dustbins

As we soar above and look down on humanity, we see your will

To reach the challenge to find your balance in Nature’s Laws
